The dialogue in ROCKY HORROR is so bad, with so many lengthy pauses
where no one speaks on screen, that it's almost like 100 minutes of
setups for jokes, as if the filmmakers were inviting the audience to
make up the punchlines!
So over the years, people began shouting their own responses to what
the actors are saying on screen. These "callbacks" are a combination
of traditional and spontaneous. Some lines are timeless and never
change ("Asshole!", "Slut", "No Fucking Neck!"), while others will
vary from region to region, theatre to theatre, year to year, taking
into account current trends, entertainment figures, and current
events. They can sometimes be very tasteless, so be warned--you may
well hear things that offend you!
But there's nothing to stop YOU from shouting your own responses. Have
fun but remember keep it FUNNY!
